Prescott slams 'nimby' turbine opposition

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has attacked those who oppose wind turbines planned near their homes.
Prescott slammed both the wind turbine “nimbys” and the planning committees who uphold their objections.
He said that planners in Bedford and the Isle of Wight, who had successfully opposed wind farms, were the “winners” of the first Age of Stupid awards, referring to an environmental film attacking those who do not act on climate change.
Mr Prescott added that Bedford planners continuously stood in the way of the proposed Piers Guy wind farm despite the developer reducing the number of turbines from 15 to nine and finally to three.
“The first Age of Stupid award goes to Bedford, which follows the Isle of Wight - even when there were many people employed, they’d refused to have it,” he said.
“We have to counteract the nimbys who say they want change, but not in their backyard.”
A spokeswoman for Bedford Borough Council said: “Albeit there is a Government expression of support for wind farms, the council cannot ignore its statutory duty to consider all aspects of any proposal on its own merits.”
