EDF considers sale of British electricity business

EDF, the French group which is one of the largest distributors of electricity in Britain, is considering selling the UK business.
The company said on Friday it was looking at options for EDF Energy, which serves London, south-east England and eastern England, as it seeks to cut its debt by €5bn (£4.6bn).
EDF's debt ballooned to €24.5bn at the end of 2008 following last year's acquisition of year British Energy, the nuclear power generator. This was up from €16.3bn a year earlier.
Pierre Gadonneix, the EDF chief executive, said in a statement. "The process to evaluate ownership options for our UK electricity distribution networks is part of the announced asset divestment programme, aiming to reduce our net financial debt."
Mr Gadonneix has promised the French government that the company would cut its debts by €5bn by the end of 2010.
At the time of the British Energy purchase, EDF said the deal would result in a better balance between EDF Energy's generation and supply businesses.
