World’s largest wind farm opens off Denmark’s coast

Last week the Danish wind energy company DONG Energy opened the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Horns Rev 2, 30km off the west coast of Jutland, Denmark.

A partnership between Dong Energy and Siemens Renewable Energy, Horns Rev 2 spans 35km sq of the North Sea and cost DKK3.5bn to build. 91 Siemens wind turbines will produce a maximum capacity of 209MW of energy with an expected annual output of 800GWh to power 200,000 homes.
The power generated by Horns Rev 2 will be purchased by a series of public and private enterprises that have entered into climate partnerships with DONG Energy.
In the coming months DONG Energy are planning to open five new wind farms. DONG Energy chairman of the supervisory board, Fritz H Schur, commented on their push for renewable energy:
“Expansion of wind power is a cornerstone of DONG Energy’s strategy in the years ahead. Therefore establishing Horns Rev 2 is an important milestone in DONG Energy’s gradual transition from conventional to green power generation.”
By 2020 DONG Energy aim to produces triple the amount of renewable energy. DONG already set up over half the world’s offshore wind power infrastructure, which would cement them as the forerunners in the sector of renewable wind energy.
