Campaigners Oppose Coal-fired Power Station In Scotland

Campaigners are protesting against Scottish Government plans to build a new 1600 MW coal-fired power station at Hunterston, Ayrshire and have launched a legal challenge against the government.
The campaigners group claims that the government has not consulted the public as per standards required by European law and that assessments did not examine alternatives to a coal-fuelled power station.
According to the group, the proposed coal fired power plant would have an adverse impact on the local environment. The Hunterston power station was a late addition to the Scottish government's National Planning Framework.
The coal fired plant will be build by Ayrshire Power, a new company that has been formed by Peel Energy and Denmark-based DONG Energy. According to BBC news, the proposed plant would be located next to British Energy's nuclear power plant, which is expected to close down by 2016.
A Scottish government spokesman said to The Scotsman: "The National Planning Framework has been subject to wide-ranging consultation, followed by a period of extensive parliamentary scrutiny. Projects designated as national developments in the NPF will still require planning permission or equivalent consents."
