A huge blast has hit the huge Russian hydroelectric plant at Sayano-Shushenskaya, killing eight and leaving a further 54 unaccounted for.
Reports suggest an oil explosion caused two of the plant’s 10 water ducts to collapse.
Sayano-Shushenskaya is the largest single power station in Russia, producing 6.4GW of power. Electricity production has now been suspended.
Situated in the Siberian republic of Khakassia, the plant supplies aluminium smelters and other industrial plants.
The Russian government has said the dam is not in danger of bursting.
Built in 1978, the gravity-arch dam is 245m high, has a crest length of 1,066m.
Once the Three Gorges dam is complete later this year, the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant will be the world’s fifth largest hydroelectric power plant.
