Wildcat stikes spread over local labour row

Hundreds of contract workers have staged wildcat strikes at sites across the country today in a row over the hiring of local labour.
Protestors have complained that an agreement to offer jobs to local workers at the building site for a liquefied natural gas terminal in Milford Haven, west Wales, had been breached when 50 Polish workers were hired.
The unofficial action started at the Milford Haven site, but has spread to others - including the Aberthaw power station in south Wales and the ConocoPhillips Humber Refinery, in north Lincolnshire.
GMB general secretary Paul Kenny said he been told by local union officials there was a long-standing agreement which required all contractors to maximise the use of local labour on the construction of the gas terminal.
He said he understood international industrial services contractor Hertel UK has refused to adhere to the agreement.
