Wind power: major offshore scheme resumes work

Construction of one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms will resume on Wednesday following a winter break.

Turbine erection will begin at RWE npower renewables’ Rhyl Flats site off the north Wales coast follwing a break since 15 December due to adverse weather and environmental restrictions.
Construction of the first of 25 wind turbines for the 90MW scheme will begin when the jack-up barge Lisa-A2 is loaded with components at the Port of Mostyn on Wednesday, from where she will sail to the wind farm site. It is anticipated that the erection of the first turbine will be completed about a week later.
The turbines are being mounted on top of the 25 foundation piles that were sunk in 2008.
“The construction programme to complete the second and final phase of Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm is in place,” said Npower renewables project manager Richard Watson.
“During the summer, the wind farm will start to produce its first electricity and we expect that all 25 wind turbines will be generating clean, green electricity in the final quarter of 2009.”
