Climate change groups have vowed to persevere with large-scale demonstrations, despite radical policing measures that thwarted a suspected invasion of a coal-fired power station.
More than 100 alleged protesters were bailed yesterday, after questioning on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass and criminal damage.
Police seized bolt croppers and locking devices when they arrested 114 alleged protesters at a school in Nottinghamshire in the early hours of Easter Monday. There was speculation that the group had planned to chain themselves to equipment in an attempt to bring the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station to a standstill.
The police may have infiltrated e-mails or the group itself.
Alan Simpson, the MP for Nottingham South, said: “There’s a danger that this is an operation conducted by people who spend too much time watching American police movies.”
A spokesman for Climate Camp, which denied involvement in the alleged plot but had links to some of those arrested, said that protests would go ahead throughout the summer. He warned that coal-fired power stations could be targeted along with an attempt to bring down a key company involved in carbon trading.
