BWEA WANTS £10M TO PUSH THROUGH PLANNING

The British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) has called on the government to provide £10m of funding to prevent aviation issues stopping planning applications.
The wind industry recently revealed that it had established a £3.2m fund to tackle aviation radar technology development, but BWEA is calling for the extra funds to develop research.
The association adds that to roll out technical solutions to all the radar systems, a total investment of £50m will be needed. In June, the wind industry along with Ministry of Defence, DfT, and DBERR signed a Memorandum of Understanding, to resolve wind farm issues for air defence and military and civil air traffic control radars.
The BWEA also criticised the heavy costs incurred by the planning system.
Director of economics and markets, Gordon Edge said: "Application costs are the most expensive in Europe. On average we think it costs around £1 million for an onshore project, and around £500,000 for offshore."
