The government's new nuclear power station programme is key to efforts to cut the cost of decommissioning obsolete nuclear power plants, a senior Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) executive said this week.
Building new plants on site of existing ones will reduce decommissioning costs because the sites of ageing reactors will not have to be returned to greenfield status, said NDA head of strategy and business planning Richard Mrowicki.
Existing sites chosen for new nuclear power stations will also continue to generate revenue and provide employment for local nuclear workers, he told delegates at the NCE nuclear decommissioning conference last week, Mrowicki said that the current economic conditions would inevitably put pressure on the NDA's £83bn budget and pointed said it would have to continue to seek ways of delivering value.
"The key right now is securing value from our existing assets and new nuclear build gives us great opportunity," he said. "Nuclear sites are now becoming more attractive to potential new nuclear operators."
Mrowicki said that government's plans to build a new generation of nuclear power stations would bring opportunities and cost savings in the decommissioning programme.
He added that decisions on the location of new plants would also play a crucial role in managing the social challenges associated with running down an entire industry.
