Scotch whisky has long been used to stave off the chills of winter and warm ones cockles, but now an enterprising group of canny Scottish distillers are planning to construct a £24,000,000 CHP (Combined Heat &Power) plant fuelled by the by-products of malt whisky production process.
The Combination of Rothes Distillers (CoRD) have pledged to do their bit for the planet by abstaining from those nasty environmentally unfriendly fossil fuels and instead use up the “draff” (malted barley) and “pot ale” residue produced during the distillation process.
According to the Financial Times, the proposed plant could generate up to 7.2MW of electricity – enough to power 9,900 homes – which could then be sold on to the National Grid.
This would also reduce carbon emissions by 46,642 tonnes a year compared with the coal-fired equivalent. CoRD hopes to encourage local homes to take up the power generated through a community scheme.
If ever one needed a guilt-free excuse for a wee dray or more. Slainte Mhath!
