LOCAL MAY NOT BE BEST

New Zealand lamb and roses flown to Britain from Kenya create fewer carbon emissions than the same produce from closer to home, a Marks & Spencers executive told the Low Carbon Economy conference.
Paul Glinn, M&Ss programme manager for sustainability, said cutting greenhouse gases was "not as simple" as reducing food miles by buying local produce, as he laid out the high street giants plans to become carbon neutral.
"Its actually better for us to fly [roses for Valentines Day] in from Kenya than take them across the water from Holland because of the way the Dutch cultivate those roses," Mr Glinn said.
"Similarly with meat, its better to take meat over from New Zealand than to use lamb from Wales. If we sourced more food locally, our carbon footprint could increase."
