The Liberal Democrats today voted in favour of proposals to transform Britain into a 100% carbon neutral economy by 2050 - with no plans for a new generation of nuclear power stations.
Delegates at the party's annual conference in Brighton approved a series of measures including plans to remove petrol-driven cars from the roads by 2040 and invest billions in the railways, including a new north-south high speed rail line to be paid for by motorway tolls.
A raft of new green taxes would be introduced with a corresponding drop in income tax. Lower "green mortgages" would also be introduced to encourage people to make their homes more energy efficient.
However, the party's long standing opposition to nuclear power stations was upheld.
"At home, we can no longer pretend that a 60% cut in carbon emissions is enough, as the Government claims," said Liberal Democrat environment spokesman Chris Huhne.
"No-one believes it, not even ministers. The science says it needs to be more than 80 per cent. That’s why we demand a clear objective for the long term: Britain should aim to be carbon neutral by 2050."
