Alstom has won a contract from UK utility firm RWE nPower for the construction of a proposed US$16 million (approx €12 million) power station in Wales.
The combined cycle gas turbine power station is planned to be located in Pembroke, West Wales, UK. With a capacity of 2,000MW it will produce sufficient power to supply electricity to around three million homes in the country.
RWE nPower is currently seeking consent under the Electricity Act to enable construction to begin on site in 2008. "We are keen to progress this project through to consent and construction. Having a manufacturer onboard is a vital step," stressed RWE nPower project manager Tim Calver.
The firm is carrying out environmental studies aimed at ensuring a sustainable development of the power station through construction and operation.
The investment follows a series of low carbon power generation initiatives launched by RWE in 2007. These include the construction of a 1,650MW modern gas power station at Staythorpe, Nottinghamshire, England and five wind farms. "We need a balanced energy mix in the UK. RWE nPower operates renewable generation as well as fossil-fuelled power stations, but more gas power is needed to ensure secure supplies and reduce the carbon impact of power generation in the UK," stated Calver.
"The new power station at Pembroke would reduce the need to run an equivalent-sized coal-fired power station, reducing the annual emissions of carbon dioxide by between six and 10 million tonnes a year," he added.
